As we know that the main Aim of Ayurveda is –

  • Maintaining the health of the healthy individual.
  • Curing the Disease of the diseased person.

So , to cure the disease of the diseased person , there are two ways as being mentioned in Ayurveda -

  1. Shamana Treatment  -  In this various herbal and herbo- mineral Medicines in different forms like Tablets , powder ,syrups etc are given for internal consumption.  These medicines are pacifying the diseases inside the body by their medicinal property. These types of treatments are basically given when the disease is new or not deeply rooted.
  2. Shodhana Treatment – In this Treatment the main aim is to eliminate the internal Causative factors of the disease i.e. the toxins, out of  the body, and for this certain procedures are done and that come under Panchkarma Therapy. So in this procedure the diseases which are chronic or in which the toxins are deeply rooted , get cured from this treatment.

. . .

PANCHAKARMA – The word Panchkarma is made form two words i.e.

Panch means Five, and Karma means procedures.

Thus, Panchkarma is the process in which basically there are Five Important Procedures or Therapies to Eliminate the toxins out of the body.

Panchkarma  is the Back Bone of Ayurveda.  Without these  procedures ,the Ayurveda is incomplete.  As with the help of Panchkarma Treatments we can cure almost all the disease specially the chronic ones . This includes various Skin Problems, Gynecological problems, Infertility, Paralysis, Tumor, Arthritis, Degenerative problems, Auto immune diseases etc. So these therapies are going to eliminate the toxins out of the body and curing the disease from its root cause and preventing the reoccurring of the disease. But in this procedure many things have to be taken care of, as one cannot give this body cleansing / detoxification procedures to all. For each procedure there are many things to be taken care of like –
  • whether the  patient is too weak , too old ,too young ,Very tired , less tolerance capacity ( Sukumar  ), Excited  etc. For these patient the Main  Panchkarma  procedures are not allowed.
  • Also the time of the particular treatment is very important .
  • The medicines used for the treatment.
  • Place of the treatment ect. All these things are to be taken care of before any Panchkarma Treatment
PANCHKARMA

Panchakarma Procedure-

The Panchkarma Treatment usually takes around 15 days to complete. This treatment is basically divided into Three Parts –

Part A – Takes around 7 days. This is called as Pre –Procedure Period.

Part B – Takes I day. In this day the Main procedure is done.

Part C – Takes Around 7 days. This is also called as Post procedure Period.

Part A - In this Pre Procedure period the process like Depaana , Paachana , Snehana And Swedana Is done.
Deepana and Paachana is the process through which the Digestive fire of the person is normalized by giving some herbal medicines and also if there is any toxins which is causing problem for digestive system to be cured.

Then Snehana means Oleation is done. Snahanais done Externally and Internally.  For External Snehana  the Process of Abhyanga ( Body Massage ) Is done and Swedana Means Sudation or steam Is given. By this Snahana (massage ) and Swedana (steam )the toxins which are deeply attached to the tissues are loosen up and In Internal oleation the person is asked to drink Medicated Ghee , thus these Internal ghee  adhere Or attracts all the toxins which are loosen up from the deep tissue by the process of Massage and steam.

Then These toxins which are adhere to the ghee are bring to the Main Gut Or G.I.T. and are ready to Expell out of the body.

Part B – In this the main procedure of expulsion is done. As by the help of  Pre- procedures the Toxins are brought from all part of the body to a single  place and then by the help of main process the Toxins are eliminated out from the body.

Like if the main procedure is Vamana ( emesis ) Then the process of Vamana is done , which is explained below in the Vamana topic and thus the toxins are thrown out and this is the main process and it takes one Single day. Similarly if the Main Process if Veerechana ( Purgation ) Then the Purgation therapy is done to eliminate the toxins out of the body.

.   .

Part C – This is the post procedure period and this also takes around 3 to 7 days. As this process is done after the main procedure thus called as Post Procedures.

After The main process all the toxins are thrown out of the body, the body become weak and the digestive fire is completely diminished. Thus after the Main Process the Person is like a New Born Baby and have to be taken care of. Thus, To enhance slowly the digestive fire of the person. The person is on particular diet, which slowly and gradually enhances the Digestive fire and makes the person fully strong and Reejuvenated and thus in this Post Procedure the Patient is on particular diet for these many days.

Thus, this is the Mechanism and whole procedure of the Panchkarma Therapy.

Main Panchakarma treatments-

The Main Panchkarma Treatments are –

    1. Vamana                           - Emesis Therapy.
    2. Veerechana                     - Purgation Therapy.
    3. Vasthi                              - Enema Therapy.
    4. Nasyam                           - Nasal medication.
    5. Rakth Mokshanam          - Blood Letting

These are the Main Five Therapies called as Panchkarma Therapy. The detail explanation of each is given below.

    1. VamanamVamanam is one among the Five Panchkarma therapy to eliminate the Toxins out of the body. In this basically the kapha toxins are being removed from the body.
Vamanam

The toxins (kapha ) that are accumulated in the upper and lower respiratory tract and in various part of the body are effectively removed by the process of Vamana. Vamana is procedure of Emesis, which is a medicated Vomiting Procedure. People with high imbalance of kapha are given this type of treatment, which detaches and mobilizes the toxins, in an effort to eliminate them from the body. In this procedure Waste products (vitiated dosha) are eliminated through the upper gastrointestinal tract. The vitiated kapha are eliminated through the mouth. After Emesis, the sinus is cleared, which in turn provides relief from, wheezing, breathlessness and congestion.

Aim and Procedure of Vamanam -

The Aim of Vaman therapy is to induce vomiting in the person to get rid of the toxins ( Kapha- mucus ).

During the treatment, kapha aggravating foods such as  rice and yogurt are given to the patient. Thereafter, Snehana ( oleation ) and Swedana ( Sudation ) is given, in order to liquefy and detach the kapha toxins which are deeply adhered to the cells and bring in G.I.T from where they can be expelled out.

Then on particular day- A drink made by mixing madanaphalam, ( Yestimadhu ) licorice, Sugarcane juice etc. is given to the patient to drink, Salt or cardamom may also be added to the medicated drink. Consumption of the drink triggers emesis in the patient. Thus resulting in expulsion of the toxins from the body.

The patient feels better after vomiting for four to eight times. After this therapy, the patient should take rest and not consume havy food . Fasting is highly recommended immediately after Vamana therapy. If vamana is administered properly, the person feels relaxed and able to breathe freely. Lightness in the chest is often experienced after this therapy. The person develops a clear voice and good appetite. All the symptoms of congestion goes away after the proper administration of Vamana therapy.

Indication -

Vamana Therapy is suitable for treating a number of diseases like anemia, chronic indigestion, sinus problems, cough and cold. Certain chronic diseases like diabetes , epilepsy, skin diseases. In case of edema, fever and lymphatic obstruction .

Nausea and food poisoning are also cured by Vamana therapy. In case of repeated attacks of tonsillitis, most of the Ayurvedic practitioners suggest to opt for Vamana therapy.

    1. RakthmokshanaRaktamoksha  means  Blood Letting, therapy .
Rakthmokshana

Raktamoksha is performed to throw out  the toxins from the bloodstream through the gastrointestinal tract. It is a safe, painless and highly effective form of Panchakarma. Raktamoksha  does the purification of the blood, hence administered to treat disorders relating to skin such as urticaria, rash, eczema, acne, scabies, leucoderma, chronic itching and hives. Enlarged liver, spleen, hemochromatosis and gout can also be cured by applying the blood letting therapy. The treatment enhances the immune mechanism in the blood system by stimulating the antitoxic substances in the blood stream.

Procedure -

Pitta and blood are closely related  to each other, thus any imbalance between the two can cause diseases related to blood. Like if pitta  increases then it  causes toxicity in the blood, thus giving way to various pitta-genic disorders. So in such cases we use Raktamoksha therapy. In these type of cases, if a small amount of blood  is extracted from the vein, a lot of pressure can be relieved that was created by the pitta-genic toxins which are widespread in the blood. Moreover, the process of blood letting stimulates the spleen in order to produce anti-toxic substances that can help the immune system of the body. Thus, Raktamoksha therapy cures a number of blood-borne diseases.

Various Ways of doing Rakthmokshana –

  • Pracchana:  Pracchana means Piercing . In order to drain the accumulated blood from a particular point of the body, this method is done.
  • Sira Vedhana:  Termed as Venepuncture,  .Sira Vedhana is done whenever vitiated blood circulates in the body.
  • Jalouka Prayoga:  Jalouka means leech .  In this therapy  Leech is applied to extract deep-seated blood. By doing this, the blood vitiated by pitta is extracted out.

So, basically these three methods are used to do Blood letting or Rakthmokshana.

Indications –

Raktamoksha  can be used to  treat a number of diseases including abscess, eczema, gout, herpes and jaundice. People suffering from Leucoderma and piles are often suggested to opt for Raktamoskha therapy.
